International Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 as part of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of ICAO.

History

In 1996, at the initiative of ICAO and with the support of the Government of Canada, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognised 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day within the UN system.

Purpose

The purpose of International Civil Aviation Day is to raise awareness worldwide of the importance of international civil aviation for the socio-economic development of States, and of ICAO's unique role in assisting States to cooperate and to implement a truly global, rapid transit network in the service of all humanity.
