
History and background
This event was preceded by the fact that the old airport had exhausted its capacity. It was built and operated during the Soviet era, for Soviet types of aircraft. The airfield had two parking lots for aircraft, a runway 2000 meters long and 35 meters wide. There were operated such types of aircraft as YAK-40, AN-28, AN-24, AN-2, which are now gone. There was also an aviation technical base at the airport, which carried out repair and maintenance of An-2 aircraft.
Status and construction
After gaining independence, the city of Karakol became the administrative center of the Issyk-Kul region and by the Resolution of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic No. 734 dated 25.11.2011 the airport "Karakol" was given the status of an International Airport, in connection with which came the need to update and comply with the new modern trends in the field of civil aviation. There are new types of aircraft that can perform flights in mountainous conditions and within the water area of Lake Issyk-Kul.
On May 7, 2022, with the participation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N. Zhaparov, a capsule laying ceremony was held in honor of the construction of a new building of the terminal complex of the international airport "Karakol".
Technical characteristics
The airfield of the international airport "Karakol" after the reconstruction has the following technical characteristics:
- 1Code designation of Karakol airfield: "4C" (ICAO norms);
- 2The airfield has one runway, two taxiways connecting the runway to the apron;
- 3Geometric dimensions of the runway are: 2450x45m;
- 4The airport apron is designed to accommodate and service up to 4 aircraft of type Embraer 195 and below at the same time.
Equipment and services
Karakol International Airport is equipped with modern special equipment and apron mechanization for ground handling of aircrafts.
Air traffic service, radio technical and meteorological support of flights at Karakol International Airport is provided by the Karakol Branch of the State Enterprise "Kyrgyz Aeronavigation" under the State Civil Aviation Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The airfield lighting and signaling equipment will be installed next year. Currently, the airfield will be daylighted and flights will be performed during daylight hours.
Education and practice
For aviation graduates, the prospects of acquiring a profession and the necessary skills are spurred off.
Our students can take industrial practice in the summer with the prospect of acquiring a profession with subsequent employment in the region.

- 7 May 2022On May 7, 2022, with the participation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N. Zhaparov, a capsule laying ceremony was held in honor of the construction of a new building of the terminal complex of the international airport "Karakol".
- 11 December 2024Today, December 11, 2024, with the participation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Nurkojoevich Zhaparov, the opening of the newly reconstructed International Airport "Karakol" took place.
