About International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is observed annually on 21 February. Languages are the most powerful tool for preserving and developing our material and spiritual heritage. Without language there would be no civilisation: we think, communicate and create in language. International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in November 1999 and has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date was chosen in memory of the events of 21 February 1952, when students demonstrating in Dhaka, now the capital of Bangladesh, demanding recognition of Bengali as one of the state languages, were shot by police.

Activities at the Institute

On 21 February, as part of International Mother Language Day, the teachers of the Languages cyclical commission held competitions of essays and wall newspapers. Curators in each group organised events dedicated to this day.
